CLIENT CONTEXT AND NEEDS

The Embassy of Ireland operates within a dynamic and complex diplomatic landscape, representing Ireland’s interests through a network of teams across the Embassy, Consulate General, and associated agencies. With a strong focus on public service and global collaboration, the Embassy places high value on professional integrity, inclusive conduct, and unified service delivery.

Given the diverse roles and geographical spread of its personnel, the Embassy identified a critical need to reaffirm alignment with its core values and foster a shared sense of purpose. While teams were individually high performing, there was a growing recognition of the need for collective reflection, open dialogue, and deeper integration of values into daily work practices.

A facilitated intervention was envisioned to:

  • Encourage meaningful conversations around critical workplace values in the context of diplomacy and public service.
  • Help staff reflect on how these values translate into everyday actions and identify areas for deeper application.
  • Provide a platform to discuss real challenges and best practices—particularly in areas like confidentiality, collaboration across missions, inclusivity, and responsive service delivery.

To meet these goals, the Embassy partnered with Emergence Learning Solutions to design and deliver a structured yet open session that would enable teams to reconnect with the 9 Values of the Embassy, align on behavioural expectations, and collectively strengthen their cultural foundation.

OUR APPROACH

Emergence Learning Solutions designed and facilitated a full-day, immersive learning experience tailored to the Embassy’s diplomatic context. The session was carefully curated to promote structured reflection, meaningful dialogue, and value-based alignment across teams.

The approach combined individual insight, team-level exploration, and collective learning through three interconnected design elements:

1. Reflective Inquiry and Visioning

When you visit our website, certain information may automatically be collected such as:

  • What went well over the past year?
  • What enabled those successes—individually, in teams, and across the organization?
  • What would success look like by the next year?

This opened the space for thoughtful introspection on team culture, individual contributions, and shared aspirations.

2. Values-Based Team Dialogue

The Embassy’s 9 shared values were revisited and discussed in smaller team clusters. Participants reflected on:

  • How each value had been demonstrated in the past year
  • Key outcomes supported by these values
  • Opportunities for improvement
  • Tangible behaviours that would help embed them further into daily actions

These conversations culminated in team-level insights that were shared during a plenary, promoting alignment across Embassy functions.

3. Collaboration through Experiential Play

Two experiential activities—Master Web and Quest for Synergy—were conducted to reinforce collaboration, communication, and interdependence. These hands-on tasks mirrored real diplomatic challenges, emphasizing trust, agility, and coordinated problem solving across missions.

Outcome Achieved

While no formal feedback mechanisms or quantitative assessments were conducted for this engagement, key qualitative shifts were observed and documented by Emergence facilitators during the workshop. These insights were grounded in reflective exercises, group participation, and observed behavioral shifts throughout the session.

To support the qualitative insights, the following thematic clusters were identified based on participant responses and group discussions:

  • Clarity of Vision: Participants expressed a clearer understanding of the mission and values of the Embassy.
  • Inclusive Workplace Culture: Teams shared appreciation for diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
  • Commitment to Service: Many individuals voiced renewed motivation towards delivering high-quality, responsive service.

PARTICIPANT EXPERIENCE

Although formal feedback data was not collected for this session, the facilitators from Emergence documented valuable insights based on live participant engagement, reflections during group activities, and informal conversations throughout the day.

The session was marked by:

  • High levels of engagement: Participants actively contributed to discussions and showed enthusiasm during hands-on activities and reflection exercises
  • Openness to learning: There was a visible willingness to explore new perspectives, revisit familiar concepts through a fresh lens, and openly share personal experiences
  • Collaborative energy: Cross-team conversations highlighted a spirit of collaboration and mutual support, particularly during team-based activities like “Master Web” and “Quest for Synergy”
